Kathy Griffin Kicks @ss!

Tuomo writes: The other day I was reading the paper and noticed that Kathy Griffin was performing at the River Rock Casino. Well, with two performances, I was convinced that both shows would be sold out so why bother pursuing this pipe-dream any further. Then last night Dave, Angie, and I were watching TV when Kathy Griffin’s reality show My Life on the D-List came on. Dave mentioned he’d love to see her if she were ever to come perform in Vancouver. At this point I brought to his attention that she’d actually be performing the day after on Saturday night, so Dave dashed upstairs to verify this (?), and thirty minutes later came down with a pair of tickets! Thank you honey! :-)

We got tickets to the earlier show starting at 7:30, and after almost two hours of irreverent, celebrity-laced potty-mouthed entertainment, I have to say the time was well spent because she’s fierce, and the tickets worth every penny. Unlike Madonna, we had very nice seats from which Kathy was like 2 inches (5 cm) tall, clearly visible, and had a thing to say a thing or two on issues ranging from Sara Palin and Nancy Grace to celebrating her birthday with Cher (Cher’s quip to Kathy being anxious about turning 30: “You haven’t had a three in front of your age in years, babe!”)

She started with when she co-hosted New Year’s Eve show on CNN with Anderson Cooper (That silver devil rrrr!) and got into some trouble in a way only she could get on live TV:

Her repertoire of jokes was too sophisticated and too well delivered for me to even try to repeat here. But... One of my many favourites of the evening though was when she pointed out that we live in a province from where you can see Sara Palin! Oh and I loved the way she skewered Nancy Grace (Boo hisssss!), the wench of a disgrace on the otherwise revered CNN.

A quick note on the audience. A lot of gay men and women were present in the crowd. Surprising? Barely! :-) Now here’s an interesting observation: we noticed a lot of bears at River Rock. Could it be because they are the D-Listers of the gay community? :-)

Finally, a lot of interesting shows coming up at River Rock Casino, including Margaret Cho next Saturday. Something to think about...

I was at the 7:30 show too! Was it great?

I too, liked the venue. When I saw the Spice Girls back in December, 2007 I could barely make them out on the stage. At the River Rock you can actually see the performer.

It was worth every penny, but I really appreciated how she thanked us for spending that kind of money in these difficult economic times. A class act.

On another note... why'd you move to Canada? Is the gay rights thing or were there other considerations into play?

I'm dying to move to California myself...

Hi Nathaniel,

Thanks for writing! I agree - and I loved how she started her show. I thought she would be making reference to not being able to see the mountains due to the miserable weather. But oh no... Kathy would probably not pay attention to such a "detail" ;-)

We moved to Canada because I wasn't able to get a permanent work permit in the States, i.e. the Green Card. It's a long story, but it really boils down to (a) what I see as unfair work permit regulations and (b) discrimination against gays and lesbians.

Oh well we're in a better place now - though we still feel a bit isolated...

California dreaming eh?! I wonder why... :-)

Ooh!

So... Tuomo is from Finland and moved to the States to be with Dave and you got screwed over for a permanent visa 'cause of those homophobic bastards, eh? Damn!

I'm glad you came to British Columbia. Next time you go to see Kathy Griffin or something gimme a holler - I'll come with so you don't feel so damn isolated! :)

Oh yeah, my US citizenship recently went through. I wrote about it here: http://www.nathaniel.ca/blog/?p=576 I never lived down there - got it through my father. But the novelty of moving down there at some point kinda appeals to me. But I'm not sure if I could handle the smell...
